Willis at a glance
What makes Willis different: Founded in 1870 along the Houston and Great Northern Railroad after the Willis brothers donated land for the rail stop, this Montgomery County city became the leading tobacco-growing region in Texas and supported as many as seven or eight cigar factories before the lifting of the Cuban tobacco tariff killed the boom in the early 1900s; it now sits on the north shore of Lake Conroe as a recreation and bedroom community.
